Biotechnology has been receiving tremendous support from the government, and there is a high emphasis on creating a pool of skilled human resource for the biotech industry in Malaysia. The career opportunities for a biotech graduate ranges across many industry sectors due to the wide applications of biotechnology. These include the food and agricultural sector, medical and bio-pharmaceutical sector, industrial and environmental sector as well as the animal and aquaculture field.
Biotechnology is a relatively new industry in Malaysia hence most of the job prospects for fresh biotechnologists thus far have been within research sector. However, there has been an increase in private funding as well as commercial focus in biotechnology, which has resulted in a growing number of biotech or biotech-related companies that have been set up in Malaysia recently. In addition, with the country's national targets such as the Bio-valley initiative, it is anticipated that there will be a healthy demand for life-science graduates over the next few years. |
