2nd National Intervarsity Biotechnology Debate

The Second National Inter-varsity Biotechnology Debate (NIBDC) oozed with intellectual discourse - and at times burst into high-octane vocals with debating teams ramping up with zest and zeal to outwit their opponents.

The event held at the AIMST University on 16 and 17 November was jointly organised by The Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC) BiotechCorp, Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) and the Kedah State Government.

The competition served as an ideal venue for the participants to gain insights into current industry trends, contribution of biotechnology in everyday life as well as social and economic impact of the life sciences.

The debate was British Parliamentarian style which consisted of four teams with two members in a team competed against each other in every round. Two teams formed the opposition party whereas the other two teams formed the government party. The motions were released two weeks ahead and made available on the NIBDC Facebook page. The debate comprised of preliminary and final rounds where the motions were selected randomly and the debaters were then given 15 minutes to prepare their points before each round. After the preliminary, results were announced to determine the qualifiers for the final round.

After rounds of arguments and rebuttals, the adjudicators finally decided the winners according to categories whereby the Champion won by Universiti Malaya Team B , the First Runner Up grabbed by Universiti Teknologi Mara and the Second Runner Up categories were grabbed by teams from Universiti Malaya Team A, and the Third Runner Up was grabbed by AIMST University. The Best Speaker Overall category was grabbed by Lavania Jeevabala from Universiti Malaya and Addina from Universiti Teknologi Mara and the Best Speaker Finalist category was grabbed by Mohd Saiful Islam Ahamadon from Universiti Malaya. Winners were presented with trophies and certificates.

Total participation throughout the 2nd National Intervarstiy Debate Competition was 40 students who came from different background ranging from biotechnology to engineering and law. Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, AIMST University, and Swinburne University participated in the debate.

The debate topics were :

Round 1: This house would ban genetically modified food.

Round 2: This house would develop biofuels rather than nuclear as an alternative energy in Malaysia.

Round 3: This house believes that animal cloning should be legalised.

Round 4: This house believes that there is a place for biotechnology in warfare.

Semi Final: This house would allow the patenting of biotechnological discoveries.

Final: This house believes that Malaysia is financially not ready for biotechnology.
