21 participants from 8 countries: Afghanistan, Egypt, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA participated in this workshop.
The workshop was moderated by Darhim Hashim, Executive Director of International Halal Integrity Alliance (IHIA).
The objectives of the workshop were met in the course of the two day. The objectives were:
- To enhance the understanding of agribiotechnology among religious scholars
- To ensure guidelines and policies (e.g. fatwa) related to agribiotech applications are considered on the basis of proper understanding of biotechnology
- To create a platform for communication between scientists and religious scholars issues related to agribiotechnology
- To adopt a resolution/statement on the halal status of GM crops/food
